Frist Art Museum and Martin ArtQuest

The Frist Museum is a family favorite, for sure! The museum is a beautifully-designed Art-Deco style building that was for many years Nashville’s main post office. Today, this renovated post office is now an amazing art museum. There are rotating exhibitions, seasonal events, and an incredible interactive children's area called Martin ArtQuest, abbreviated MAQ. It is a must visit for families!

Martin ArtQuest (MAQ) provides hands-on art experiences for kids and grown-ups alike. There are several activities that stay year-round, but also some displays that reflect the current changing exhibitions in the galleries. Martin ArtQuest provides opportunities to explore a range of art-making techniques including drawing, animation, printmaking, painting, and sculpture. We will not be entering The Frist Museum or Martin Artquest Gallery on this tour, but if you decide to visit, admission for anyone 18 or younger is FREE with the purchase of an adult ticket. Adult admission is also discounted if you show your Nashville hotel key. Before you head to the next stop, check out the features of the back entrance, which include ball-shaped sculptures, a rotating public art installation, and the green space at the top the stairs. There are also restrooms inside the back entrance (which are an art installation themselves), a gift shop and lots of kid-friendly gifts, and delicious snacks and treats in their cafe.

Fun Fact: While the Frist Museum building used to be home to the Main Nashville post office, it still houses the downtown branch on the lower level if you’d like to send a Nashville postcard out to friends or family! The scramble letter for this stop is “M” for “Main Post Office.”

Turn away from the Frist Art Musem and continue up Tenth Avenue South to Demonbreun St. Cross Demonbreun on the right side of Tenth Avenue. Located at 209 Tenth Ave. South, the next stop, Cummins Station, is right in front of you.

Description Built with Public Works Administration (PWA) funding by local architectural firm Marr & Holman, this massive Art Deco post office was completed in 1934. The interior retains many original Art Deco details, such as the geometric terrazzo and marble floors, aluminum handrails on the interior stairs, and stainless steel grilles inset with images of modes of transportation. In 1998, ownership was transferred to the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County. The building was converted into the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, with the post office operating out of the basement. The name was changed to the Frist Art Museum in 2018. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
