Earnest Bar & Hideaway

“Wine is a grand thing. It makes you forget all the bad,” wrote Ernest Hemingway in A Farewell to Arms in 1929. Though the spelling of this restaurant adds an “a” to Earnest, the idea for this restaurant and bar was inspired by Hemingway and co-owners Paul Cercone and Christopher Weber’s love for literature. Bar & Hideaway is inspired by the life and writings of Ernest Hemingway—best known for his novels A Farewell to Arms and The Old Man and the Sea in 1952. Hemingway was a World War I veteran who was part of a group of authors during the 1920s and 1930s called the “Lost Generation.” Ernest Hemingway is also known for his alcoholic sprees with contemporary author James Joyce. Co-owner Paul Cercone stated that Earnest Bar & Hideaway sought to make tangible Hemingway’s “…liberation from obligation through libation and fare.” This is our last stop, and we hope you’ll check out this bar and restaurant that pays homage to the era associated with Hemingway’s life and legacy.

While Hemingway’s creativity centered on writing and sports—he had many friends who were influential visual artists including Pablo Picasso and Juan Gris. Similarly, Wedgewood-Houston is a neighborhood that successfully blends an eclectic art scene with spirited drinks, a rich history, and a renewed sense of diversity and identity. With co-working space, an architecture firm, a record pressing operation, and an Apple Music office, Wedgewood-Houston also features more than nine art galleries.

Thanks to the organization Arts & Music at Wedgewood Houston, the neighborhood puts on a monthly art walk on the first Saturday of the month. With over a dozen venues participating, the event is a free way to explore the area and dive into the expansive art scene in Nashville.
