Mike Curb Buildings
To your right is a building that says “Curb.” That’s because that’s where the songwriters who write for Mike Curb go to write songs. Curb Records is one of the world’s leading independent music companies. Since 1962, Mike Curb and Curb Records have released over 300 #1 records!
This particular building was originally the WENO radio station before Mel Tillis bought it. Mel owned Cedarwood Publishing, and his company was in this building. In fact, Mel wrote several songs right here at 48 Music Square East.
If you look directly across Music Square East, you’ll see another office building owned by Mike Curb. That building sits at the former site of the Country Corner Bar—previously known as the Talley Ho Tavern—and that’s where Kris Kristofferson worked as a bartender.
Now, look cattycorner and you’ll see one of Curb’s recording studios. There are two big guitars there—so you might want to have your picture took. It was a mighty great invention when they put a camera on phones. Now you can send that picture back home and let all the folks know what they’re missing. Ain’t that amazing.
Let me tell you a little more about Mike Curb. He is a music executive who owns his own successful record label, and he’s been in the music business for over fifty years. Mike has led a very interesting life outside of music too. He was in government as Lieutenant Governor, as well as Acting Governor of California for a term. And he’s a huge fan of racing—NASCAR, Indy Car, and ten other forms of racing. You name it and Mike has a racing team. Don’t worry, I’ve got more to say about Mike Curb and his leadership right here in Nashville, but let’s save it for another stop.
Now let’s walk just a few steps further to see a long, low brick building that has WNAH out front. That’s a radio station but there’s offices in that building too. In fact, many years ago, Johnny Cash had his office there.
Continue walking down Music Square East back towards Owen Bradley Park. The next stop, SESAC and CMA will be on your left.
