Never Never

WeHo’s transformation over the last thirty years includes the loss of several businesses. While some remain, many buildings have been torn down, but a few, like this one, have found new life. You are now at 413 Houston Street—a specialty spirit bar called Never, Never. The area once housed a dog food factory and welding company. From the outside, the mid-1900s building isn’t very imposing or impressive, but step inside and this hole-in-the-wall reveals a cool but classic neighborhood bar.

The last business to operate out of this building was the Hines Welding and Repair Shop. Never, Never aims to retain the welding shop’s original “blue-collar” feel, which includes the original Hines Welding sign displayed on the wall. The bar’s concept and location was chosen by owners and brothers Bryan and Jamie Kenney. They wanted to tap into the area’s artistic vibe in a way that was both accessible and comfortable. Rather than focusing on specific food or signature drinks, Never Never seeks to create a different experience.

Rather than a typical drink menu featuring cocktails or other mixed drinks—Never, Never simply lists the available liquors, beers, and wines. Once a spirit is selected, the bartender asks about your preferences and makes a drink crafted specifically for you—talk about personalized customer service! Their food menu features several comfort food options ranging from vegan chili to pancakes to meatloaf. In a 2019 interview with Nashville Scene, Jamie Kenney was asked why they chose this unlikely spot. He said simply, “We fell in love with the building because of its history.” No longer a machine shop for welders, this WeHo watering hole continues to honor the area’s industrial past.

From Never Never, return to Houston Street, walking back the way you came. The entrance to Jackalope will be on your left.

Description Never, Never opened in 2019 by brothers Bryan and Jamie Kenney. The bar occupied what was once Hines Welding and Repair Shop and strove to retain the industrial feel of the building’s former life. A sign from a former tenant was displayed on the wall, and a pair of decorative industrial fans adorned either side of a large loading deck door that served as a large window. Never, Never’s menu features straight-forward food options and a spirit list from which the bartender would craft a cocktail according to the customer's preferences.
