Gloria McKissack (standing in front of the door in a black coat) leads a tour of her family's home in 2025. The house was completed in 1912 and built by her family's architecture firm. McKissack is the oldest family-owned Black architecture firm still in existence. Ms. Gloria was also a Civil Rights activist involved with the Nashville Sit-Ins and the Freedom Rides. Later, she joined the faculty of the history department at TSU. Image courtesy of Edgehill United Methodist Church.

Edgehill and Conclusion
At 1503 Edgehill Avenue you will find the home of Moses McKissack III. From this residence, Moses led the company that his grandfather first began. You’ll be glad to know the home is still owned by the McKissack family. More broadly, the Edgehill neighborhood reflects the ingenuity of Black professionals, educators, artists, and public servants. To learn more about this tested yet resilient community, take our Edgehill walking tour on Nashville Sites.
Congratulations! You've completed the McKissack and Black Architecture driving tour on Nashville Sites. Architecture is about aesthetic design and visual appearance, but these elements go beyond mere function to create buildings that evoke meaning, beauty, and artistic expression. As famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright said, “The mother art is architecture. Without architecture…we have no soul of our own civilization.”
We hope you've enjoyed learning more about this family and the importance of the built environment in public history. Tag us on @NashvilleSites and consider making a small donation so that we can continue to create engaging tours that are free and accessible to all. Thanks for joining us—this is Brian Tibbs signing off.
