Tennessee State University

Congratulations! You have completed the Tennessee State University Tour on Nashville Sites. You should now be back at the visitor’s parking lot. Along the way you’ve seen many places that are connected to important people, events, and departments and have heard stories of accomplishment, adversity, dedication, and service to a university that has inspired and educated so many. As our tour of Tennessee State University concludes, it is necessary to remind you that there are several spaces and people whose names adorn the monuments of brick, steel, and mortar that we omitted due to time restraints and other logistical considerations. Nevertheless, the university would not have survived for more than a century without their efforts.

A few of these individuals must be mentioned. They include Mary L. Wilson (Dean of Women and Director of Social Activities), Henry Allen Boyd (businessman and The Nashville Globe editor), and Dr. Frederick Humphries (TSU’s fifth president).

Please consider taking one of our other tours to learn about the role of TSU and other Nashville HBCUs in our city’s history. From Early Black Life and Culture to Civil Rights Sit-Ins to New South Nashville—we have many other sites and stories to share. And be sure to tag and post to our social media channels @NashvilleSites. Thank you for joining us!
