Woodcuts was opened on September 23, 1987 by Nathaniel Harris. who had started a framing business out of his garage. He quickly outgrew his home and searched for a permanent retail location. He reached an agreement with Fisk University, to rent the proterty at 1613 Jefferson street. With help and funding from Nashville Minority Business Development Center, Harris opened the business in four months. Harris, the first president of Jefferson United Merchants Partnership, hoped his business would show others the potential of the old and abandoned buildings lining Jefferson Street. He is credited with helping facilitate the revitilization of Jefferson Street.
