Description

The University of Tennessee at Knoxville is a public land-grant research university that was founded as Blount College in 1794, two years before the state of Tennessee was founded. It was the first public university chartered west of the Appalachian Divide. The school was renamed East Tennessee College in 1807, moving locations to its current site in 1826, shortly before being renamed East Tennessee University in 1840. During the Reconstruction Era following the Civil War, the university was renamed University of Tennessee in 1879. As of 2020, the university has an endowment of $1.34 billion.
