Description

Chattanooga University was founded in 1886 by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. It merged with Grant Memorial University (now Tennessee Wesleyan) in 1889, then became University of Chattanooga in 1907. The school joined the University of Tennessee system in 1969. Founders Hall, built in 1886, was part of the original campus and is next door to Hooper Hall and Race Hall, both built in 1917. Patton Chapel was dedicated in 1919 and is used for university and public events. As of 2021, the 321 acre school had an endowment of $147.1 million.
