Trailways Station

36.161754, -86.780684

Description

Trailways Transportation System was founded by Burlington Trailways in 1936 as an organization of five independent bus lines aimed to compete with Greyhound. In the fall of 1960, the Trailways station was a site of sit-ins by students protesting the segregation of lunch counters and interstate bus lines. In December of that year, Bernard Lafayette was attacked by a white taxi driver from behind and was arrested though he did not retaliate. In February of 1961, students returned and were served at Trailways.
