Thomas W. Talley was born on October 9, 1870 in Shelbyville, Tennessee. He attended Fisk University and received his Bachelor's in Arts in 1890 and his master’s degree in 1892. From 1903 to 1942, Talley taught science at Fisk University, and was the chair of the Chemistry Department for twenty-five years. Although his academic career revolved around the sciences, Talley also made great contributions to African-American music, collecting and compiling secular black folksongs, and composed an original song, “Behold That Star.” Talley retired from Fisk University in 1942 and died in Nashville, Tennessee on July 14, 1952.
