Tennessee Technological University was founded as the University of Dixie in 1909, led by the efforts of Jere Whitson who served as the first chairman. The state assumed control in 1915 and renamed the school Tennessee Polytechnic Institute. The Main Quad of the current campus sits on the original school acreage and includes Derryberry Hall, the oldest building on campus (named for former president Everett Derryberry) as well as the original men's and women's dormitories (Bartoo and Kittrell Halls respectively.) In 1965 the name was changed to Tennessee Technological University.
