Description
This house was built c. 1852 for Mary Childress Benton, a cousin of Sarah Childress Polk. Stephen Childress and his wife owned the home during the Civil War, then sold it to Dr. L.G. Noel. Granville Sevier purchased the home from the Noel family in 1927. He renovated the house, built the one-story brick wings, and built the stone office. His heirs sold the property to the city of Nashville after his death in 1945. Sevier Park opened on this property in 1948. The community center was built in 1963 and the park added picnic shelters, tennis courts, a playground, and a basketball court. In 2010, the Nashville Historical Foundation office relocated here.
