Description

Prior to moving to Nashville in 1924, the Scarritt College for Christian workers was located in Kansas City, Missouri. Its aim was to train young women missionaries. When the school moved to Nashville in 1924, Nathan Scarritt donated land for the campus and Henry Hibbs (1882-1949) worked to design the buildings. In 1981 Scarritt College became Scarritt Graduate School. It was purchased by the Women’s Division of the United Methodist Church in 1988, and the Scarritt Bennett Center was founded. The Scarritt Bennett Center is an advocate for social equality and empowerment for all, a goal reinforced by Martin Luther King Jr.'s visit and speech at the center in 1957.
