Samuel Kress opened the first S.H. Kress (1863-1955) and Company store in Memphis in 1896. There were eventually 264 of these five-and-dime stores across the country, including one which opened in Nashville on North Summer Street, now Fifth Avenue North, circa 1900. That building was razed in 1935 and a new Kress building was constructed by Foster and Creighton on the same site, opening on February 18, 1936. Like other Kress stores built between 1929 and 1944, this building is notable for its distinctive Art Deco-style architecture. As of 2019, the building had been repurposed into loft apartments.
