Description
Located in the Printers Alley National Register Historic District, the Men’s Quarter was a block along Fourth Avenue between Church and Union Streets. Starting in the mid-nineteenth century, saloons, and other recreational establishments concentrated in this area and offered men places to dine, drink, and indulge in various vices. The Men’s Quarter was considered inappropriate for respectable women, and women would often go out of their way to avoid traversing the area. Prohibition took a toll on the businesses here, but the later twentieth century saw a resurgence of the entertainment district.
