Description

Meigs School was built inside a former Confederate gun factory. The building became the first school for African Americans in Nashville after the Civil War once it was built in 1883. The school graduated the first African American senior class in Nashville in 1888. The original building was destroyed by a tornado in 1933 and moved to its current location on Ramsey Street. Meigs School became one of the first magnet schools in Nashville in 1983. The Ramsey Street school was torn down in 2002 and renovated to hold its growing school population.
