The building that housed McClellan's was built in 1882 as a store front to house Ocean Confectionary until the mid-1920s, when McClellan's came to the location in 1927. McClellan's was a five and dime store, which was involved in the 1960 lunch counter sit-ins. The store closed for a short period of time for remodeling but reopened in May 18, 1942. The store stayed open into the 1980s. It is a three-story building in the commercial Italianate style. The building was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in the 1980s as a part of the Fifth Ave Historic District.
