Dickens became a member of the Grand Ole Opry in 1948, when the Opry was still at the Ryman Auditorium. He last performed on the Opry in late 2014, just days before his death in January 2015. The statue was unveiled in recognition of the Ryman Auditorium's 125th anniversary.
