Christa Suppan and Jonda Valentine opened the Lipstick Lounge on September 4, 2002. Valentine originally pitched the idea to her sister and their respective girlfriends at the time while living as a portrait artist in East Nashville. After opening the bar, Valentine asked Suppan, who was working as a server at the bar, to be her business partner. In March 2020 the bar was damaged by a tornado, but through crowdsourced funds they were able to restore the building. As of 2022, it is the only lesbian bar in Tennessee and one of the few remaining in the United States.
