James Weldon Johnson, born in Jacksonville, Florida in 1871, was a prominent African American educator, activist, lawyer, and writer. Johnson began his education at the Stanton School, completed his high school and college degrees at Atlanta University, and later completed a law degree. Johnson served as principal at the Stanton School for several years working towards further racial integration of students. He also held several positions within the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) including Vice Secretary. Johnson ended his career as a professor of creative writing at Fisk University. He died in New York in 1938.
