Historic Belmont Quad and Bell Tower

36.133439, -86.795072

Description

Completed in 1853, the Belmont Tower originally functioned as a water tower for the Belmont Mansion. Constructed by Adolphus Heiman, the tower stands at 105 feet tall and was modeled after the Lighthouse of Alexandria built in Ptolemaic ancient Egypt. During the Civil War it also functioned as a signal tower. In 1928, the Ward-Belmont School inserted twenty-three bells in the tower, making it Tennessee's first carillon and one of five now existing in the state. The Belmont Tower was renovated in 2010. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.
