George W. Cunningham House

36.15798, -86.77871

Description

Born in 1827, George Cunningham made the house his residence in 1858 on the site of his mother in law's gardens. The Italianate house was an ornate show of Cunningham's wealth accrued as a partner in the hardware wholesaler firm Fall and Cunningham. During the Civil War, the house was used as headquarters for William Rosecrans (1819-1898), Don Carlos Buell (1818-1898), Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885), William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891), and George Henry Thomas (1816-1870). It became the Hermitage Club in 1881, and a third floor was added. It was razed in 1930 for a parking lot.
